How does financial aid work? aims to cover tuition alone or tuition and housing?

I just got accepted into a prestigious pre-college program. It's $10,000. Does financial aid aim to solely help tuition fees? Or does it aim to help towards tuition and housing fees?

Or does financial aid payment differ depending on whether it's a pre-college program or actual college?|||Federal and state financial aid is only for college (not any type of pre-college). Any aid you receive will come directly from the school you're attending. What it covers/doesn't cover depends on your school and how much they have to give out and how "needy" your family is.|||My school covers itself for tuition first and anything left will be given to me in a form of a check. My school's policy is that financial aid is for anything in your life that will help you do good in school that semester (eg. a car, housing, books, computers).
